Many BrahMos staffers have official data on personal devices:ATS FIR

Nagpur: Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) investigators grilling Nishant Aggarwal have reported that the BrahMos Aerospace systems engineer confessed to having copied data related to the missiles from his senior colleague Alan Abraham’s computer, when he was still undergoing training in the organization.
The First Information Report (FIR) registered by Uttar Pradesh ATS was accessed by TOI. It says Aggarwal told investigators that he had copied the data from the official computer of his colleague around four years ago, without his permission. The person from whose computer the data was downloaded was posted at the Hyderabad facility of BrahMos Aerospace, where Aggarwal was undergoing training. The person has now quit the job and is pursuing a research project in Canada.
Aggarwal had just joined the organization four years ago, and was posted at the facility in Nagpur before arrested three days ago.
The FIR says Aggarwal confessed that he had copied the data without his colleague’s permission. However, he has also named close to a dozen other colleagues, who, he claims, have even more sensitive data stored on their private computers as wel. the designations of these colleagues include his peers andeven seniors.
However, Agagarwal had no answer to how official data, which was supposed to remain a secret, reached his personal devices pertained to mution of war, supersonic BrahMos cruise missiles.
The FIR further says that apart from storing the details in in personal devices, Aggarwal also had links with two Pakistani Intelligence Operatives (PIOs).They were in contact with him through fake Facebook (FB).accounts in the name of Neha Sharma and Pooja Ranjan.Aggarwal did not reveal anything on how did he got in touch with the two persons on Facebook.Their e-mail IDs have been traced to Pakistan, said the ATS.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that among the papers seized by ATS from Nishant’s computers is a user manual of the missiles supplied to the Indian Navy. The manual is, however, supposed to be 10 years old,and a routine document each engineer has for his reference.Much changes have been made to the system since then, said sources.
Sources said it was sometime during 2011 that such information was provided in soft copy to a number of BrahMos Aerospace employees for reference.Even this was supposed to remain in official computers only.After that, software that does not allow data to be copied or altered has been put in place.
Sources say the investigations began after an IAF officer was held on similar charges early this year. It was found that Neha Sharma was a Facebook friend of this officer too. An army officer at Jabalpur too was under scanner.
The FIR mentions that the PIO agents using fake names had been extracting information from top officials of important defence establishments of the country. Their tactics included honey trapping and even blackmailing and bribaery.

ATS FIR says two Pak operatives — Neha Sharma and Pooja Ranjan – had befriended many defence officials.
Honey-trapping, bribery and blackmail were tactics to glean information.

3 Scientists detained after papers leaked to ISI

New Delhi: Two scientists from the Defence Research and Development Organisation and one from Brahmos Aerospace have been detained for allegedly leaking confidential documents to a suspected Pakistan-based ISI agent after becoming targets of a honeytrap.

Two of the scientists are working with the DRDO’s Defence Materials and Stores Research and Development Establishment in Kanpur. The third scientist is working at a Brahmos unit in Nagpur, which is involved in making critical components for the missile, according to sources.

The missile, which is supersonic, can be fired from submarines, ships, aircraft or land. This person had been working at the Technical Research Section of the Nagpur unit for several years.

The three scientists were active on some social media sites, where they were allegedly compromised.

The Military Intelligence wing of the Central Army Command had been examining their activities on these sites and figured that they had allegedly become targets of honeytrap.
It is suspected that the scientists had transferred some confidential documents to an ISI agent, who was pretending to be a woman, according to sources.
The Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra ATS were alerted about the matter and the scientists were thereafter detained.

The computers of the three individuals have been seized and the authorities are questioning their associates.

Kindly provide me with the following information requested under the purview of the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005 in respect to reports published in various leading paper like The Hindu Buisnessline on 30 July 2013, BrahMos, the world’s first supersonic cruise missile developed by the Indo-Russian joint venture BrahMos Aerospace, has bagged orders worth Rs 25,000 crore from the Indian defence forces.

  1. Please provide whether MOD, Govt of India placed such Rs 25000 crores order to Indo-Russian joint venture BrahMos Aerospace duly approved by Government of India. Yes or No.
  2. If yes then provide the date of such approval and names of committee members who have approved the above mentioned order.
  3. Provide the delivery period of above order of BrahMos Aerospace.
  4. Provide the information regarding this ordered product whether it will be manufactured fully or partially in India.
  5. Provide the information of till date whether BrahMos Aerospace manufactured any mentionable (not hook type things) parts of supersonic cruise missile in India.
  6. Amount of export orders received by BrahMos Aerospace till date.

High Court bars coaching institute from using Brahmos name in test

Holding that Brahmos is a well known and reputed trademark for supersonic missile in the aerospace industry, the Delhi High Court has restrained coaching institute FIIT JEE from using it for its online aptitude test. It said it gives an impression to the engineering students that the institute’s test is affiliated with Brahmos Aerospace Pvt. Ltd under the Ministry of Defence.

Brahmos Aerospace, in which the Government of India is a majority shareholder, had moved the High Court after it started receiving queries from engineering students if they would be given any preference for employment in the company by taking the Brahmos aptitude test conducted by the FIIT JEE.

Passing the interim order, Justice Manmohan Singh said: “There is no valid justification given by the defendants (FIIT JEE) before this Court how this trademark Brahmos hit upon them except false and frivolous submissions. It is adopted and used by the defendants deliberately in order to take the advantage of the mark Brahmos of the plaintiff (Brahmos Aerospace).”

Brahmos Aerospace is a joint venture between India’s Defence Research & Development Organisation and Russia’s Military Industrial Consortium NPO Mashinostroyenia.

The FIIT JEEhad been advertising a course and an aptitude test for engineering students by the name of Brahmos in conjugation with the phrase ‘will give you top 03 career options as per your inherent aptitude’.

DRDO disowns chief controller, says he is retired

DRDO claims Dr Pillai has retired even though its website shows otherwise

The Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) has refused to acknowledge that Dr Sivathanu Pillai is the chief controller of research and development in the organisation, despite the fact that Pillai is still very much a part of DRDO. Pillai’s post is regarded as the second most senior defense scientist post in the country, just after the position of Scientific Adviser to the Defense Minister.

His name also does not feature on the list of senior scientists who are presently serving on an extension with DRDO. Pillai, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Brahmos Aerospace, was granted his third post retirement extension last year.

When contacted, Ravi Gupta, the spokesperson of DRDO said that Pillai’s name is not on the list of senior scientists who have got extension because he has retired from DRDO after getting two extensions as no further extension is possible beyond the age of 64.

However, the DRDO telephone directory of 2012 mentions Pillai’s name and carries his designation as CC of R&D in DRDO on page number 4 and his Delhi number has been listed there. Similarly, the invitation card of National Institute of Technology, Kozhikode, that was held last month, where Dr Pillai was the chief guest, mentions his designation as CC, R&D in DRDO.

Gupta also added that Pillai’s name will be removed from DRDO’s website. However, even after three weeks of this correspondent speaking to Gupta, DRDO’s website still shows Pillai as the CC of R&D.

This mysterious disappearance of the name from the seniority list and the fact that DRDO is denying that Pillai is still a part of DRDO has raised questions about why the government is not “acknowledging” that a third extension has been given to Pillai.

Third extensions are given very rarely, if at all. This was acknowledged by Gupta too, who said that third extension beyond the age of 64 is not possible. Pillai was given his first extension in 2007 by Defence Minister A.K. Antony.
